Jason's Story

Reconnected to her dad, Jason’s daughter shows her support for his progress in the New Life Program. She joined him at the finish line as he achieved his goal to complete the Post News-Colorado Colfax Marathon.

After losing his family and job to alcohol, Jason resolved to build a new life for himself in Denver. “I showed up with 50 dollars. Soon, I found myself sleeping next to the Lawrence Street Shelter.” Every night, Jason slept in the cold until a staff member “invited me to come inside out of the elements for a warm breakfast. The chaplains touched me in a certain way. I learned I couldn’t live that lifestyle any more. I then joined the New Life Program.”

Jason says that the program proved challenging: “For me it was a test of how much I wanted to change myself.” Through the program, Jason was “able to learn lifeskills, manage my emotions, become more self-sufficient—proactive instead of reactive.”

“I have so much appreciation for the New Life Program. If it hadn’t been for them, I don’t know where I’d be. I met some of the nicest people . . . staff and residents that are still my friends.”

After ten years of separation from his daughter, Jason was finally able to reconnect with her through Qwest, who generously provides long distance service to our guests who desire to call their families on Thanksgiving. A Qwest representative was able to hunt down her phone number, and Jason worked up the courage to call. He left a message on their answering machine. “It was nerve-wracking,” he says softly. “I eventually was able to send a letter and some pictures. [My ex-wife] bawled her eyes out, because I’d finally made contact. I asked them for forgiveness for my past deeds, and they forgave me!”

Today, Jason considers himself a new man. He is living and working in Nevada, so he can be close to his daughter. He looks back with wonder on his journey. Jason came in for shelter from the cold and a warm meal, never expecting a life change. “I just came for a meal and to get out of the cold,” Jason says. “But I have memories from the New Life Program that I will not soon forget. There’s no way I could ever repay that debt I owe the Mission other than to live a good life and make my family proud of me.”

He continues, “They are doing much more than giving a meal. They are saving lives.”

From the CEO

Dear Friends,

There is no doubt that this is a painful time for everyone. We are all suffering through one of the toughest financial downturns in history. Add this to the fact we are a country at war, and this is an election year, and uncertainty—even anxiety—can result. I personally do not know anyone who has not felt the impact of these turbulent times.
People frequently ask me, “How are things at the Mission? Are you seeing more people?” We are seeing more people in need. In fact, during the last fiscal year, the numbers for all of our key services increased dramatically:

  1. We provided the most meals ever, over 600,000—up from 550,000 the previous year.

  2. We provided 164,000 nights of shelter, an increase from 152,000 the previous year.

  3. We helped 260 families into permanent housing—the most ever.

  4. We graduated 62 people from our New Life rehabilitation program, another all time high.

  5. We distributed a record 176 tons of clothing.

As you know, there are many reasons for being homeless such as loss of a job, the high cost of housing, foreclosure, medical expenses, domestic violence, and substance abuse. Whatever the reason, the Mission has always been committed to helping everyone who comes to us for help. And they have been coming!
As we continue to reach out during this time of human urgency, I hope that you will remember those who are even less fortunate than you and I. Meeting the growing need during these difficult times is not easy, and we need your help. Occasionally, I have heard a donor say, “My small gift is insignificant.” Please know we do not feel that way. A lot of small gifts may be just what we need to be able to continue meeting the increased demands during this tough time.
You are important to us. We need your help financially, as volunteers, and with gift-in-kind donations, so that we can meet this urgent need. And if you happen to be a dad or mom who has just lost a job, we can offer you a food box to help you feed your family.
Finally, I want you to know we are praying for you as we face these times together. We serve an awesome God and know that we can trust in Him!

God bless!

Brad Meuli

Camp Experience Recap

Camp Experience is a one-of-a-kind retreat held at Copper Mountain designed exclusively for women in leadership. This year, as one of the camp’s four charity partners, the Denver Rescue Mission not only received 7,000 pounds of donated clothing and generous financial support, but had the opportunity to share its vision with the women in attendance! A Champa House mom shared her inspiring testimony with nearly 250 women. Thank you, Camp Experience, for your generosity, concern for the homeless, and for partnering with the Denver Rescue Mission.
