Volunteer as an Individual

Thank you for letting hungry, hurting and homeless people know the community truly cares for them!

Volunteer Group of the Month

Aletheia Academy

"I was blown away by this group’s respect and compassion for our outside guests, program participants and DRML staff. At the end of the night, after a fight had broken out, I asked them what their response was. Most of them answered, “Pray.” Its groups like this one that make me proud to work with the Volunteers of Denver Rescue Mission. This group has been coming since Fall 2012,and they continue to show an excitement and passion for their service."

-Josh Littlejohn, Volunteer Coordinator at the Lawrence St. Shelter

Volunteer of the Month:

Nick Foster, Long-term Mentor

Nick has been a volunteer mentor with the Engaging Our Mentors Program since the start of the program in October, 2010.  An active and driven individual who loves God, motorcycles, and the challenges of the business world; he took on mentoring in a capacity far greater than the program requirements once matched with his mentee, Chris who was in the New Life Program for men.

Traveling across town to take Chris to church that was back across town, introducing him to a church family that embraced Chris, sharing a meal and local activity where just part of developing the relationship when they were together.  Nick challenged Chris to become a better man and to understand who he was in Christ.

Throughout the relationship Chris would communicate Nicks candidness in helping him understand accountability and responsibility and chuckled once saying, "Nick wears on me but it's only because he's right".  Too, he expressed gratitude for the time they spent together, the folks he met and activities they did along the way and  more  so, the peace he has in his faith thats greater than his past.

On a deeper level, Nick was modeling being a Christ like man.  Love, truth, patience, consistency, availability and conversation encouraged Chris along the way to pursue  going the distance in the program and graduating.  Chris went back to college and is working hard at completing school, has dreams and plans for the future and is still in contact with and encouraged by Nick.  A lifetime friendship in motion.

After staff observing this mutual transformation, Nick was asked to mentor a young man in the Youth program. His mentee, Jacob has said this about Nick, “I think Nick is a good mentor because he brings me food and brings his dogs and just tries to help me out as much as possible.  He helps with problems at home and at school.  He’s taught me to not give up faith but to keep going.”
